Miami resident Albert Gonzalez shocked the world when he was indicted for the largest case of identity fraud in history. Using colorful aliases such as “Soupnazi,” he hacked into the databases of several retail chains and stole information from more than 130 million credit and debit cards.
Gonzalez made a plea deal and faces 15 to 25 years in prison, but his lawyers asked he receive a light sentence and submitted a psychiatrist’s report stating his behavior was consistent with Asperger’s syndrome, a form of autism.
Those with Asperger’s are said to have difficulty socializing with others but have a keen eye for detail, which often helps them excel in areas such as math, computing, science, and, apparently, hacking.
