Hate crimes in Florida were up 22 percent in 2012, according to information just released by Attorney General Pam Bondi’s office. In all, there were 170 instances of people being charged with a hate crime in Florida, up from 139 in 2011. That’s also the highest number since 2008.
According to the report, 92 of those crimes were against people based on their race or skin color; 49 were against people on the basis of their sexual ordination. Here’s a chart breaking down the types of crimes committed and the motivation behind them.
This year saw the highest number of hate crimes against people based on sexual ordination since 52 were reported in 2006.
Only 11 hate crimes were reported in Miami-Dade County. Interestingly, the Miami-Dade, Miami, and Miami Beach police departments did not report any hate crimes for 2012. Homestead PD reported the most — four — followed by two incidents each reported by Aventura, Coral Gables, and Miami Gardens.
