There's something special going on this season with the Miami Hurricanes women's basketball team, but the squad experienced its first setback since their second game by falling to FSU last night 66-59. The loss ends Miami's 17-game winning streak, which tied Duke's longest winning streak in the nation.
Katie Meier's squad has thus far gone undefeated in the ACC and only had dropped one game to Nebraska earlier this season to reach a ranking of 16th in the country, but the 21st ranked Noles proved to be too much.
Despite a 3-point play by star Riquna Williams that brought the game to 60-57 in the final minute, Florida State was able to put away the Canes on free throws and strong defense.
"They swarmed our two scorers," Meier told the AP. "They didn't give us our first or second looks in our offenses. We didn't show a lot of maturity on that end."
The game marks Miami's lowest scoring night of the year, and while Shenise Johnson put 21 points on the board and Williams accounted for 18, the team struggled to make baskets in the second half. In fact, Williams' late-game three pointer was her only score of the second half.
The 'Canes come home for the remainder of the week's games, with North Carolina State coming to town Thursday and Georgia Tech arriving Sunday. Wins against those teams should keep Miami in the polls, but then it's a three-game stretch in which Miami plays the ACC's top three teams: Duke, Maryland, and North Carolina. Two of those games are away.
