Late last week on I-75 near Naples, a Florida Highway Patrol trooper spotted a blue 2012 Ford Focus going 87 mph in a 70 mph zone, and inside was all the crazy. The driver, Leyla Denise Aykin, realized she was being pulled over and promptly slowed to 40 mph -- while both her left arm and foot stuck out the driver's window. As she slowed further, to 27 mph, Aykin dangled a scarf out the window and released it like a beautiful dove. Once she finally came to a complete stop, the insanity really began.
Aykin eventually told the officer she was on the way to "taste the ocean" and that she "wanted to taste" him and "gaze through" him. Police still aren't sure what she was on, but they arrested her for DUI.
The 27-year-old from Orlando's wild ride caught the FHP's attention just after 1 a.m. last Thursday, when her Focus blew through a speed trap.
Officers cautiously approached the Focus after witnessing her bizarre performance art routine, and as she exited her vehicle, the trooper reported, she did a "wide stretch of her arms" and "appeared high" with a "lights on nobody home" look in her eyes. Asked to place her hands on the back of the vehicle, Aykin proceeded to kneel down and say a Muslim prayer.
While on her knees, the trooper reported, Aykin said she "wanted to taste me and gaze through me," according to the Sun-Sentinel.
Before hauling Aykin off to the clink, the trooper asked her where she was headed. "To taste the ocean," she responded, before beginning to sing and chant. The trooper finally asked Aykin if she had someone he could contact for her, preferably from Planet Earth, to which she replied that indeed, she did, and his name is "Jesus."
Police found a green substance in her car, but Aykin argued it was "sting nettle," which she uses to make tea -- and in fact the leafy residue tested negative for marijuana. Aykin scored a perfect 0.00 on her BAC test, but everyone involved assumed nobody is that deliriously excited to taste the ocean and booked her on DUI charges.
