Amid Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis's ongoing push to aid the Trump administration's sweeping immigration crackdown, a handful of Florida universities and colleges have signed agreements to cooperate with United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) through a federal program known as the 287(g) task force model.
The program allows police officers to stop, question, and detain people suspected of violating immigration laws.
Under the agreement, campus police officers will undergo mandatory ICE-provided training to interrogate people about their immigration status and arrest them without a warrant.
Meanwhile, international students at dozens of universities nationwide have recently had their F-1 visas — which permit them to live and study in the United Stat — revoked, or their F-1 student status terminated by the U.S. government, often without clear explanations. More than 1,700 students and recent graduates have recently had their legal status altered by the U.S. Department of State in some way, according to Inside Higher Ed.
