Brightline trains killed more than two dozen people across Florida this year, according to a Miami Herald investigation.
Since the high-speed rail line — dubbed the deadliest train per mile in America — began test runs in 2017, it has killed nearly 200 people statewide. A recent WLRN and Miami Herald investigation found that, on average, the train has killed one person every 13 days, all while the company has “failed to urgently address the train’s dangers, blamed victims for the high death rate, and, as fatalities climbed, turned to the public to pay for safety upgrades.”
“Even then, critical life-saving measures, including fencing along the tracks and suicide-crisis signs, haven’t been installed due to years-long delays in the release of federal funds,” the investigation reads.

The Herald‘s reporting also produced the first comprehensive list of people killed by the train (196 deaths since 2017 involving victims ages 17 to 84). Here’s everyone who died along the rail line this past year:
