The cyclist seriously injured in an accident in Coconut Grove yesterday morning has been identified as 20-year-old Michael Lum. Miami Police say Lum was attempting to cross South Dixie Highway at SW 17th Avenue just before 6 a.m. Tuesday when a car struck him. He remains in critical condition at Ryder Trauma Center after undergoing surgery last night.

Lum's friends and family have set up a website for donations to help pay his medical bills. According to the site, Lum did not have health insurance at the time of the accident.

Miami Police Det. William Moreno says Lum was not wearing a helmet but, at age 20, was not required to by law. Moreno adds that the driver of the car involved in the accident stopped to help in the investigation and that authorities are still interviewing witnesses.

As New Times has previously reported, Miami-Dade is one of the deadliest counties for cyclists in the state. At least 12 bikers were killed in traffic accidents last year.
