As Comptroller of Miami Shores 44-year-old Carolyn Modeste was in charge of the village’s bank accounts. Now the public servent has been arrested from stealing $203,293.70 between September 2007 and September 2008.
According to Miami Shore Police, instead of placing cash fees paid by citizizens in the banks, she’d instead put them in her own pocket. She’s then try to cover up the loses by depositing other fees paid by checks that were collected but not previously deposited.
She’s being charged with first-degree grand theft, organized scheme to defraud and official misconduct.
Modeste’s lawyer tells CBS4 that she filed an EEOC complaint against the village a year ago, and that these charges are merely retaliation.
