Almost one in four children in Florida lived below the poverty line in 2010, according to data from the US Census.
That means 923,963 Florida kids live in poverty (defined as a family of four living on less than $22,314-a-year). That works out to 23.5 percent of all kids in the state. That’s higher than the national average of 21.6 percent, and a rise of 1.2 percent for the state since 2009.
The child poverty rate rose overall in 27 states, and by one percent or more in 12 states, including Florida.
The numbers are more pronounced among minorities. More than 38 percent percent of black children live in poverty in Florida, along with 36.3 percent of children who are listed as “other race,” and 28.3 percent of Hispanic children.
Only 18.4 percent of white children in Florida live in poverty, though that’s a two percent increase since 2009.
