Thirteen years. That's how long it's been since Wilco took the stage in Miami. The band's last show in the area was March 15, 2012, a lifetime ago for many. People were wearing skinny jeans, and Facebook and Twitter were fun websites for sharing photos and life updates instead of sinister apps designed to brainwash grandma and flood the world with AI slop. Pitchfork was in its heyday as a musical tastemaker. Arcade Fire and Bon Iver were winning Grammys. It was a different time and a much friendlier moment for indie rock.
The band's frontman, Jeff Tweedy, has performed solo a few times in South Florida since Wilco's last engagement, but the full band hasn't made it down in a decade and a half. That's about to change. Wilco has just announced a new spring tour, hitting a handful of major cities in the South with, incredibly, four dates in Florida, including Miami. The band will make its triumphant return to the Fillmore Miami Beach on Tuesday, April 29.
To say that Wilco is one of the seminal indie rock bands of the last 30 years is a massive understatement. The group rose to fame during the alt-rock boom of the Nineties with a novel sound dubbed "alt-country" by the music media. The band reached a creative pinnacle with the 2001 album Yankee Hotel Foxtrot, a more challenging and experimental record that many still consider Wilco's best. Thanks to record company shenanigans that threatened to overshadow the music itself, the band released the record digitally in September 2001. The timing of its release coincided with the aftermath of 9/11, and critics began to interpret the record's tense atmosphere and songs like "Jesus, Etc." and "Ashes of American Flags" in the context of the changing geopolitical landscape. Pitchfork gave it a rare perfect 10.
Since then, Wilco has released nine more albums, including 2007's acclaimed Sky Blue Sky, and the band's propensity to change styles and incorporate distinctive influences has earned it comparison to Radiohead. Wilco officially went independent with The Whole Love in 2011, and the records since have had some quirky titles — Star Wars in 2015, Schmilco in 2016, and so on. The most recent album, 2023's Cousin, featured production from singer-songwriter Cate Le Bon. According to a press release, the tour will focus on songs from Cousin and the 2024 Hot Sun Cool Shroud EP, as well as the band's soon-to-be-reissued classic records The Whole Love and A Ghost Is Born.
Waxahatchee, the project of musician Katie Crutchfield, will open for Wilco. It's also been a while since Crutchfield's last Miami show, her most recent gig in the city being a 2017 show at Gramps with the now-defunct band Ought opening. In addition to Crutchfield, the band's current lineup includes drummer Spencer Tweedy, son of Jeff Tweedy and bandmate of his in their project Tweedy. Popular singer-songwriter MJ Lenderman also played guitar on Waxahachee's last album, the Grammy-nominated Tigers Blood from 2024.
Tickets for the show go on sale this Friday, January 17, at 10 a.m. local time via livenation.com.
