The original soundtrack to Appleseed, the new anime film from the creators of Ghost in the Shell, initially promises to be more interesting than the emo-rock blowouts that usually accompany action films. It boasts cuts by Basement Jaxx (“Good Luck”), Adult. (a special “Appleseed’ version of Carl Craig’s brilliant “Hand to Phone” remix), and T. Raumschmiere (“One Man Army”). However, unlike notewothy soundtracks such as Garden State, Appleseed‘s array of smart electronic hits feels random and scattershot, never coalescing into a a singular piece of work. The real revelation on this disc is the Boom Boom Satellites, a Japanese duo whose four tracks mix rock and big beats into a sugary, flashy concoction.
