Relic Aims to Make Saturday Night Out Dancing Like Coming Home

With their weekly Saturday-night party, Relic, Travis Rogers and his partner Fiin wanted to fill a void they saw in Miami: an electronic music party specializing in local talent. "We want to organically grow a night that was about the music," Fiin tells New Times. "People want to come to something unique. We decided to have a night with no bookings, a night about the vibe. Mainly, it's me playing. I invite some locals and we create the night where people come to party."

Fiin first met Rogers a few years ago when participating in a DJ contest. "Every other week, we had a 12-hour event at Scene where local DJs got to play for an hour," Rogers reminisces. "Whoever won got an opening slot for a big gig. Fiin didn't win, but I thought he should have. He had a good look and personality and made himself visible with the music. Most of Miami is techno; Fiin had a unique sound. He was more melodic and groovy."

As the talent buyer for the now-defunct Heart Nightclub, Rogers made the now-25-year-old Fiin the establishment's youngest resident DJ.

Last Labor Day, the pair began to throw Relic every Saturday night. The first few months were held at Basement Miami Beach. In December, they made the move across the bay to Wynwood Factory. The relatively new location fits the vibe they're trying to create, Fiin says. "Even though it's a warehouse, it feels like home. It's very minimal, but once you walk in and hear the good music, you know you've come to a place where you can be yourself."

The genre of music is nonspecific, Fiin says. "I'm an emotional person — it depends how I feel that night what kind of music I play." The guests are also varied. This Saturday, January 19, will feature Miguelle, a Panamanian DJ making his Miami debut; and the Puerto Rico-born, Bronx-bred DJ/producer Blas Cordero. The January 26 edition will present local DJ/producer Adisyn and the Miami-based duo Dakap, which specializes in techno and house.

Relic's cofounders believe their sense of hospitality is what makes their party stand out from other nights in Miami. Says Rogers: "We open at 11, but we're there at 9 working with the light and sound guys to make sure everything is right. I feel like a politician shaking hands with everyone all night, making sure everyone is having a good time. Fiin is doing that too until he takes the booth at 1:45. We want people to know they picked the right thing to do on a Saturday night."

Relic.11 p.m. Saturday, January 19, at Wynwood Factory, 55 NE 24th St., Miami; wynwoodfactory.com. Admission is free before 1 a.m.
