Sarasota’s Stone Soup is actually a group of barefooted singers who just happen to play instruments. The members of this rockabilly quintet take turns singing lead vocals; making violin and mandolin-tinged snippets of rap, comedic a capella, and campy duets; and offering up harmonies tighter than a glee club. On the group’s colorful new EP Dancin’ Shoes, these three guys and two gals sometimes pleasantly slip into something that sounds like the pensive folk of Natalie Merchant-era 10,000 Maniacs, but they make a point to maintain a healthy amount of earthy humor and hubris-free light-heartedness.
