Last week, when New Times ran an article on Miami's Ten Most Legendary Concerts, we included a quote from Terry Weiss, keyboardist for 1960s Hialeah rock band Brimstone, who, as a teenager, played at two of the shows. Brimstone performed at the 1968 Easter Sunday Love In at Greynolds Park, alongside more notoriously opening for the Doors the following year at the Dinner Key Auditorium Show, where Jim Morrison was arrested for lewd and lascivious behavior. When New Times reached out to Weiss to share the article, we learned from his Facebook page that he had fallen on hard times and set up a GoFundMe to raise funds to help with car and home relocation.
His GoFundMe page, which has raised $3,825 of the $4,500 requested, listed a personal message: "Hey friends, I'm thanking you in advance for your support. Unfortunately, I have fallen on hard times and I'm in a desperate situation currently. My car has been damaged and is in need of repairs. Also, my landlord is in need of selling his condo where I'm currently living, and I need to be out by August."
The note continues: "Normally, in the past, I could play my way out of a crisis of this nature, but it is getting hard to find work. I've had some medical issues for the past several months, and that has hindered me from doing what I do best, sing and play music. Any help you could provide would be greatly appreciated and a grateful thank you from the bottom of my heart. Your prayers and donations would be a positive welcome for me."
Weiss told New Times he suffered from congestive heart failure in May, which left him in the hospital for four days. He's currently staying with a friend in Coral Springs, but it is a temporary situation. "I am safe and hope to get better soon to play," he said. Adding simply, "Please help."
As a Hialeah High School student, Weiss formed Brimstone in the '60s, who played on the same bills as the Grateful Dead, Led Zeppelin, and the aforementioned Doors. For a 2021 New Times article, Weiss humorously recalled being forced to testify in the Jim Morrison case over whether the Lizard King really did flash the crowd. "I was a big fan, so I swore he didn't show his wanker. Then they brought out these close-up shots of him holding his dick in his hand. I said, 'I must have missed that.'"
Weiss relocated to Deerfield Beach, where he was a longtime performer up and down Broward and Palm Beach until his recent health troubles. His music was also heard in the James Franco-starring HBO series the Deuce. Here are a couple of songs by Brimstone recorded in 1969, including an unorthodox cover of Bob Dylan's "Blowin' in the Wind."
