Electronic dance music is officially in love with its own sonic past. All across the international scene, you can hear the recycling of classic styles from the ’70s, ’80s, and ’90s.

Now hate all you want, but the fact remains: Some of the golden oldies truly nailed a timeless formula for the dance floor. Just ask DJ-producer Serge Devant. His new sophomore album, Rewind, on Ultra Records, takes things back — as its name implies — to the old-school EDM sounds he holds dear.

Rewind is an homage to the now-classic gems that the Russian-born Devant heard as a recent immigrant while hanging out at seminal New York City nightclubs such as Tunnel, Twilo, and Limelight in the ’90s. The track selection boasts his own modern twist on hits by electronica pioneers such as New Order, William Orbit, and KLM. But the record is not all retro fodder — there are also original bangers like the soon-to-be-a-hit single “On Your Own,” featuring vocalist Coyle Girelli.

Devant’s survey of dance music’s past has certainly given him enough insight into how to get the big rooms of the world’s megaclubs fist-pumping in unison. Find out for yourself when he stops by Set this Sunday on his Rewind tour.
