Whose ears are ready for some nostalgic noms? Starting tonight, The Garret at Grand Central will be serving up a heaping hot monthly portion of bass and funk, spruced up to perfection with some Latin spices. It's going to be muy picante. It's going to be Sabrosura!
The new party from Poplife kicks off with no cover and all the sexy vibes you can stand, not to mention Mike Deuce and Mr. Pauer, who'll be bringing a special blend of sonic flavors.
We spoke with Pauer to get 411.
"The idea behind Sabrosura is basically to embrace Latin culture in a whole different way," Pauer says.
The concept: Take classic and traditional Latin sounds (Fania, salsa, cumbia, mambo, and the like) and mix them with contemporary bass, electro, house, and rock beats. It's all about embracing the culture of Miami's Hispanic community in a way that new generations can easily appreciate, while bringing the feeling of Doral or Little Havana to the downtown space.
Mr. Pauer thinks the Garret is a great place for this type of party. The dedication of the staff and Poplife promoters mixed with its loft-style environment should make for something really special. He also feels that, considering his history and own productions, his involvement is a no-brainer.
"It was a natural fit," he tells us. "A lot of my songs from my DJ sets are mash-ups that I bring from that type of culture, like from Fania. I have remixes and traditional cumbia mixed into bass, more house-y beats with Latin spices. I actually do a lot of mash-ups from current tracks to going crazy, from the Strokes and Nirvana to Hector Lavoe or Willie Colon. I mash all those guys. It's really fun to be a part of it."
Mike Deuce, another progressive Grand Central favorite with Hispanic roots, will be bringing his own brand of Latin-infused hard funk and electro. The two men will each bring something unique to the decks while both blending the nostalgic sounds of Motown and Latin rhythms with modern dance stuff.

The whole place will also be decorated in Hispanic kitsch, transforming The Garret into a blast from your past. And did we mention drink specials? Enjoy $8 Medallas and Herradura tequila as well as two-for-one Redd's Apple Ale. But even with the booze, we know what you're coming to do.
"The dancing's going to be amazing," Mr. Pauer said. "It's going to be beginning-to-end dancing, bringing a lot of flash back from the childhood, as far as your parents or your abuelas, and actually embracing that culture in this era. I think that's the best part."
