With Pushin On, the second album from Quantic Soul Orchestra, Will “Quantic” Holland ups the ante on breakbeat culture. The only thing that gives away the fact that the album was recorded in 2005 instead of 1969 is its lack of vinyl crackle. Holland wields his skills as an electronic producer and remixer to craft deep funk and soul tracks with live musicians instead of drum machines, samplers, and turntables. He easily steers an eleven-piece band through hard cinematic excursions à la Lalo Schifrin (“West Pier Getdown”), smooth and breezy Brazilian pop (“Paintings and Journeys”), and slamming second-line grooves (“That Goose on My Grave”).
