Electroclash was simply too retro for its own good. Why listen to Fischerspooner’s carbon copy of “Blue Monday” when the original was still around? Then Princess Superstar along with DJ Alex Technique formed the DJs Are Not Rock Stars collective. The duo learned the elusive art of beatmatching and quickly gained an established following among those looking for something more adventurous than an Eighties-revival prom night. A star singer/rapper in her own right, Princess Superstar now divides her time between elaborate live performances and anything-goes DJ sets. The antithesis of the superstar DJ, the Princess plays just about anything to get the crowd moving, plus her penchant for wearing outrageous costumes makes her much more fun to look at than old, boring trance stalwarts like Tisto. With a fresh monthly residency at downtown’s newly opened Studio A, Princess Superstar gives the local indie-dance kids one more thing to feel happy about.
