Miami is in for a treat since performance post-punk/garage band Girldick will be playing their first show in South Florida on Friday, July 18 at Kill Your Idol. The group will be joined by a powerhouse of locals, including Blood Orchid, Miss Michigan, FIZZZ, Rat Bastard, and, according to the info we gathered, a special noise guest.

New Times caught up with Blair Broll and Philip Brand from Girldick from their home base in NYC to talk about their origins, live ethos, and what they have in store for their Magic City debut.

Formed in 2021 out of a need to keep creating after college, Girldick began as a way for Blair and her best friend — a bassist — to stay connected and inspired. "I grew up in the punk scene in Kansas City, and I've always loved music where you can have a bit of humor about it," Broll says. "It was the right time to make something that channeled all of that."

Their reputation has been largely built through live shows. The band played South by Southwest in 2022 and opened for The Voluptuous Horror of Karen Black at MoMA PS1 during Pride last year — thanks in part to Broll's longtime friendship with artist Kembra Pfahler and connections through Columbia University. "She's like a big sister to me," Broll says. "She's the reason we got to open for Michael Imperioli's band. She's always looking out."

When it comes to songwriting, Girldick takes a fluid, collaborative approach. Sometimes Blair writes lyrics first; other times, it starts with a bassline or drumbeat. Their latest single, "Arm the Dolls," came together in one session. "The core of that song is rhythm," Brand explains. "Blair and I just locked in. It felt like a conversation between the drums and vocals."

Even though they've only released two songs so far, live shows have always been at the heart of the project. "For years, we were booking gigs without putting anything out. It was all word-of-mouth," Broll says. "We're loud, we're sweaty, we're screaming. The recordings are one thing, but the live show is where the real energy is."

This Miami stop — followed by a second show at Propaganda in Lake Worth on Sunday, July 20 — is technically not a tour, but it has that energy. "We're treating it like a tour," Brand says. "We're in the streets promoting it. We're excited to come to Florida."

Broll echoes the sentiment: "This has been in the works since last summer. I met Alma (the event organizer) at the MoMA show, and we've been trying to make this happen ever since. It's our first time playing Florida. We love Miami. The people are raw and real, just like New York."

The band has been checking out the Miami-based artists on the lineup and is hyped to share the stage with them. And while the venue might be intimate, the performance won't be small. "Expect sexiness, bikinis, heels. Expect us rolling on the floor and in the crowd," Broll laughs. "It's not a hardcore punk show, but you'll be moving and screaming and sweating."

Looking ahead, Girldick plans to record an EP this fall, with a potential winter release and an eye toward a European tour in 2026. But for now, all eyes are on Miami.

Girldick, Blood Orchid, Miss Michigan, FIZZZ, Rat Bastard. 8 p.m. Friday, July 18, at Kill Your Idol, 222 Española Way, Miami Beach; 305-534-1009. Tickets are $14.99 via Shotgun.
