Jatavia Shakara Johnson, better known as JT, has always been a product of Miami grit and glamour. Raised between Carol City and Liberty City, the rapper first made an impact in the music industry as one-half of the City Girls before stepping into her solo era last year with City Cinderella, cementing her fierce confidence and signature 305 edge. Now, she’s entering a new kind of spotlight, this time in the cannabis world.

JT is the face of High in the 305, a new campaign from Flower by Edie Parker, highlighting the brand’s expansion into Florida. Known for its pop culture and fashion-forward approach to smoking, Edie Parker’s choice to partner with JT feels like a no-brainer, as effortless glam and authenticity seem to be a natural bridge between the two.

When asked about her ideal smoke break with friends, JT has an answer ready for New Times “In Miami, it would definitely be the beach when it’s not too windy. And in New York, at my house, because my house is so nice. It looks like I live in Miami in New York because I can see the whole Hudson River surrounding me. I smoke at my house all the time. It’s the perfect view, the perfect vibe. And I’m grown. I don’t got to smoke outside no more, and with the Edie Parker, it’s not going to leave that heavy scent, so you can keep it cute.”

In terms of weed preferences, JT is practical, like her approach to the industry. “It depends on what I’m trying to do,” she said when asked if she prefers indica or sativa. “If I’m trying to go out, whatever one will make you not sleepy. But if I’m trying to go to sleep, indica, and then sometimes I like a hybrid.”

The campaign arrives on the heels of her recent single, “Girls Gone Wild,” released late last year, and following the success of “Ran Out,” the song that also got a remix from Kaytranada over the summer, and a video featuring Gabbriette and Quenlin Blackwell. The Magic City rapper just teased via Instagram that a new track called “Numb” will be out soon, and we are sure ready for it.

JT’s journey hasn’t been polished, but it’s always been powerful. From freestyling in Miami to charting solo hits and headlining her own tour, she’s stayed close to her roots while levelling up every step of the way.
