Latin Multi-Instrumentalist Chico Mann Plays Electric Pickle on Friday

With our usual focus on the house and techno end of things going on at the Electric Pickle, it's easy to overlook the fact that the Wynwood hotspot has also become one of Miami's premiere live music venues, showcasing a regular variety of local and international bands. Past bookings, including the energetic Turkish trio Portecho and Atlanta-based five-piece Stokeswood, have shown the Pickle's slant for experimental electro-acoustic acts who are blending eclectic styles and pushing the contemporary dance music envelope.

In this regard, Friday's gig by special guest performer Chico Mann should be a welcome and worthwhile treat, especially for those with a penchant for Latin-inflected dance grooves. The talented New Jersey vocalist and multi-instrumentalist boasts a robust fusion of electro, Latin freestyle, Afrobeat, and Caribbean rhythms that sounds like some dream collaboration between Afrika Bambaataa, Fela Kuti and Willie Colon.

With his spicy melange of live, multi-layered vocals, funky guitar licks, chunky synth basslines, and drum machine beats, this one-man orchestra is guaranteed to put on a riveting performance.

Mann headlines a special old school Cuban-inspired "Grand Slam Cubano Super Disco Jam" at the Pickle on Friday night. He'll be accompanied on the decks by guest DJs Illich Mujica and Captain Ridiculous, along with residents Will Renuart and Tomas of Aquabooty. Don't forget your guayabera!

Chico Mann with DJ Illich Mujica, Captain Ridiculous, and Residents. 10 p.m. Friday, June 18. Electric Pickle, 2826 N. Miami Ave., Miami. Ages 21 and up. 305-456-5613; electricpicklemiami.com
