Sure, The Kentucky Derby was a month ago. But summer is the perfect time to enjoy a mint julep.

In fact, when you consider the julep is basically a bourbon and mint slushy, you’ll wonder why you never thought of this classic Southern libation as the perfect drink for a hot Miami afternoon before. It’s also the best way we know to continue enjoying bourbon when the temperature is in the steady ’90s (although spiking an iced tea or lemonade always works well, too).

The mint julep is traditionally served in a pewter cup and garnished with a mint sprig and powdered sugar. It’s an elegant old-world presentation for a classic drink.

Yardbird Southern Table & Bar makes their big-ass mint julep ($15) with Maker’s 46, a smooth, slightly sweet bourbon that’s aged inside barrels containing seared French oak staves. Classic Julep

2 oz bourbon

3/4oz simple syrup

6-8 mint leaves

Stir bourbon with simple syrup, and 6-8 smashed mint leaves (to release oil). Strain and pour over crushed ice into a pewter mint julep cup. Garnish with sugared mint sprig.
