Kaito’s eighth Kompakt release celebrates his relationship with deep house and trance in a lovely sequence of epic-length ambient segments steeped in welcoming synth washes, speaker-switching swirls, and unobtrusive beat touches. Hundred Million Light Years swims into more than an hour of play, with grand, sweeping finishes that push Kaito’s pulsing techno-clip rhythms far into the mix. Born Hiroshi Watanabe, the world-traveling DJ/producer has been watermarked with the nu-trance/neotrance label, for no aspect of his work is rendered without ample swabs of delay or playful keyboard melodies. “Your Brilliant Flowers,” one of Hundred‘s shimmering jewels, is grounded in dense swells of fuzzy textures, and it mirrors the abundantly layered walls of sound that Ulrich Schnauss borrows from the Nineties shoegazer greats. Kaito’s lush synth loop for “Flowers” is soon entrenched in a varied percussion pattern that is outshined only by his consistent, insatiable augmentation of the track’s base. Minimal it ain’t.
