Juan's Birthday Bash
A perfect storm of birthdays takes place this Friday and Saturday at Laundry Bar.
Not only will owner Juan (a.k.a. Burn, a.k.a. the brain behind Basshead Productions) be lying about his age to the babes, but also DJ fixtures Karakter, Burn, and Nicky Dee will face the music by playing their own birthday sets to warm up the dance floor for Tampa's DJ Monk on Friday. On Saturday night, Jojo Flores drops in to extend (or prolong) the festivities.
Monk's luck has been just this side of phenomenal, with remixes of Cooler Kids' "Punk Debutante," Boomkat's "The Wreckoning," and t.A.T.u.'s "All the Things She Said" all buzzing the Billboard Top 10 dance charts. The dreadlocked DJ/producer/artist is a hip-hop die-hard. His hard house and funk-breaks style mixes disco, tribal, and drum 'n' bass. You'll know him by his trail of collaborations with Confucius, with whom he has remixed Sarah McLachlan, Smashing Pumpkins, Garbage, and White Zombie. Monk's remix of Britney Spears's "Do Something" was included on her international single release.
And that's just Friday. Saturday night finds Gotsoul Recordings star Jojo Flores setting off his unique conflagration of garage, deep house, and Afro-Latin rhythms. Awarded New York City's Best International DJ three years in a row by Underground Archive, Flores has established honorary residencies in clubs from New York to Singapore, marking some local territory by spinning at Therapy.
