In case we didn’t get you to break down and check out Jive Collective at its last Jazid show, luck is with you, because the band will be there again December 11.
Bar-goers weary of the house/trance same-sameness everywhere in the city might find Jazid something of a sanctuary, even if owners Cesare Mazzoli and Michelle McKinnon (a former model) were suckered into providing a Twister mat for the horny when the place first opened. It’s something of an epicenter for the jazz/Latin/cumbia mishmash that’s slowly rumbling its demand for acceptance around town, and, at ten years of age and counting, it’s SoBe’s oldest club, having watched Rose’s Tattoo and Stella Blue, among others, fall by the wayside. It’s a small but mellow place of the drop-in-and-chill sort, featuring vintage, oft-reupholstered couches; seven-dollar drinks; no cover charge on weeknights; and an upstairs populated by regulars playing board games.
As for Jive Collective, the fusion quintet formerly known as the Method is a melting pot of its own, bringing Australian, American, Haitian, and Dominican cultural influences to bear in the quirky but poetic jazz-funk compositions of sax player Troy Roberts and trumpeter Jean Caze. — Eric W.
