Spanish-language performances at the Super Bowl drew criticism from plenty of conservative commentators, but days later, Spanish-language performances took center stage at Mar-a-Lago.
On Feb. 10, the president’s private Palm Beach club hosted the inaugural Hispanic Prosperity Gala, a black-tie event featuring Spanish music, Latin American flag displays, and a keynote address from Argentine President Javier Milei, whom Trump has previously referred to as his “favorite president.”
Videos circulating on social media show that the event also included an AI-generated video of Donald Trump dancing to “Los Comunistas Donde Están” (“Where Are the Communists?”), a Venezuelan-themed Spanish-language song. The video depicted a digitally rendered Trump dancing in various settings, including alongside Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping. In some sequences, he appears in front of the White House; in others, he is shown dancing in a circle or midair in rhythm with the music.
Guests in formal attire were seen dancing onstage as the video played behind them.
The event came days after Trump publicly criticized Puerto Rican artist Bad Bunny’s Super Bowl halftime performance, which was largely in Spanish. On Truth Social, Trump described the show as “absolutely terrible” and wrote that “nobody understands a word this guy is saying,” calling the performance “an affront to the Greatness of America.”
Bad Bunny’s halftime set included a display of pan-American unity. During the performance, he said “God bless America” before naming countries across North and South America as dancers carried each nation’s flag.
At the Mar-a-Lago gala, attendees similarly waved Latin American flags during portions of the program. The event was organized through a partnership between Latino Wall Street and the conservative nonprofit America First Policy Institute.
According to the Palm Beach Post, attendees included Rudy Giuliani, Roger Stone, and Mike Flynn. Latin Grammy winner Nacho and U.S. ambassador to Argentina Peter Lamelas were also present. Photos from the event show guests walking a red carpet and gathering near Mar-a-Lago’s pool area, where performers dressed as mermaids posed for photographs.
Milei praised the MAGA movement during his keynote address. The gala was described as sold out.
The event comes at a time when Latino voters remain a key constituency in national politics. In the 2024 election, Trump saw notable support among Latino voters, though recent polling suggests shifting dynamics within that demographic.
Within a week, Spanish language performances were at the center of both public criticism and a formal celebration, underscoring the evolving and sometimes contrasting ways cultural expression appears in political spaces.
