The Hukilau seems to be stepping up it’s game this year with at least one of this writer’s favourite surf instrumental bands, Los Straightjackets. Aside from their musicality and deft picking, the band is also noted for it’s decision to don mascaras de lucha libre whilst wearing business attire.
The Hukilau is a celebration of Tiki culture, an offshoot of 50’s leisure life that mimicks white people’s impressions of Polynesian living replete with fruity drinks, surf music, ukuleles, aloha shirts, and a general fun loving attitude. It all goes down on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, 6/12-14, at the Bahia Cabana up in the Venice of America, Ft. Ladedah. It’s always super fun and people literally come from all over the world to get shitty and dance and look at cool art and cars and stuff.
Check it out, this video from the YouTube of Los Straightjackets after the jump.
