This Saturday, we wear black. As New Times reported last year, Miami's goth scene is thriving, and one of the forces fueling its rise is local promoters and community Hexed Miami. They return with "It's a Goth Party" at Bar Nancy this weekend.
On the bill are LA-based darkwave acts Grizz and Vick Vapors, currently on their Puedes Amarme tour — a name borrowed from their collaborative single that blends vulnerability and menace in equal measure. They'll be joined by Miami's own Ciguapa 305 and Glitch Demon, who will carry the night into the early hours with a dark dance afterparty of post-punk and musica oscura.
At the center of this gothic whirlwind is Grizz, the project of Los Angeles artist Malik Harris, who's been making waves with his signature blend of shadowy aesthetics, hypnotic club energy, and cinematic flair. Whether fusing hip-hop and darkwave on "Frightening, But Blissful" or delivering fog-drenched bangers like "Club Flesh," Harris never shies away from impactful sonic pairings. "I've recently added a Roland drum pad to my live set," he tells New Times, hinting at new twists for Miami's crowd. "I've got some cool sounds loaded in, something different for this show."
The tour's title, Puedes Amarme ("Can you love me?"), speaks to the emotional tension running through Grizz's work. "I tend to always find myself making songs about past relationships or potential experiences," Harris says. "That phrase is me being as vulnerable as I can be. My live sets are full of passion, dancing, and energy. It's my idea of romance."
That dark romanticism also runs through Grizz's recent collaboration with Debra Fogarty on "Come Alive," a track that pulses with nocturnal magnetism. Harris reflects on the process: "I listened to the record over 100 times before it came out. We started production back in January, and when Debra sent me the final version in June, I really took my time to enhance what she created. It made me a better collaborator."
Asked to visualize "Come Alive" as a film, Harris doesn't miss a beat: Queen of the Damned, specifically the bar scene where flames erupt in chaos. "Come Alive is the toxic era anthem," he laughs.
As the darkwave revival continues to seduce both elder goths and the freshly converted, Grizz hopes his live show gives fans something unforgettable. "Heavy fog, my dark silhouette onstage, dancing to the beat of my electronic drums, I want it to feel cinematic," he says. "Everyone should dance like no one's watching. Surprise your friends. Once the room is moving, my job is done."
