Ever go to the beach or a botanical garden and say the only thing missing from the picturesque view is a 36-piece orchestra performing the music of Beethoven, Rossini, Bottesini, and Schumann? If so, this is just the month for you, as Orchestra Miami will have three performances on three different days at three different locations across the city. Even more amazing, all three concerts are entirely free with advance reservation at orchestramiami.org.
What Is Beethoven on the Beach?
The three performances are known collectively as Beethoven on the Beach. The Orchestra Miami website describes what to expect from the program as, “Beethoven’s joyous Symphony N. 7 in A Major, Op. 92, the Overture, Scherzo & Finale Op. 52 by Robert Schumann & the Overture to Il Signor Bruschino by Rossini. The 36 musicians of Orchestra Miami will be led by Artistic Director Elaine Rinaldi.” Also on the bill are husband and wife duo Karen Lord Powell and Brian Powell, performing Bottesini’s Gran Duo Concertante for Violin and Bass.
Concert Dates, Times, and Locations
The first concert takes place this Saturday, March 21, at 6:30 p.m. at Gateway Park in Sunny Isles, which offers free parking on-site. If you live further south, you can check out the performance the next night at 6 p.m. on Sunday, March 22, at Pincecrest Gardens, which also has free on-site parking. Finally, the next week at 7 p.m. on Sunday, March 29, Orchestra Miami will be back on the beach at the Miami Beach Bandshell.
If you’re low on savings, make sure to reserve in advance for the latter two shows, or entry will require a $10 donation. Though generous patrons of the arts are always welcome to donate more on their website. You can also reserve a seat for the two Sunday performances with a $25 donation.
Orchestra Miami was founded 20 years ago with the goal, according to their website, to “build community and to educate through music by bringing high-quality symphonic music at affordable prices to all people in South Florida.” The orchestra is made up solely of professional musicians who reside in South Florida. Since their founding in 2006 they’ve proudly collaborated with the Miami-Dade School District to introduced over 35,000 students to classical music for free.
