On Friday morning, Forward Motion Records CEO and Dreaming in Stereo frontman Fernando Perdomo got all hyped up about the supposedly undue attention that weirdo tuneage has been given lately by local music journos.
So he published a somewhat misguided, misspelled, and erratically punctuated Facebook outburst, which he titled: "What is with all the exposure Miami Noise and Experimental music is getting as aposed to Miami's Pop music scene!!"
Within a half-hour, Broward-Palm Beach's County Grind reposted Perdomo's blurtings. And later, Crossfade had issued its own lengthy response.
But today, we talk to Perdomo about his Facebook outburst, noise music, and what he thinks the Miami music media is doing wrong.
Crossfade: What happened Friday morning?
Fernando Perdomo: Something hit me when I saw the Top Five Weirdest Releases of the Year thing. I was like, "OK, another noise thing."
Now I get really passionate and really crazy and this was really early in the morning ... And it started off as a Facebook status update. But I was told, "It's too long. Do you want to update it as a note?" So I did it as a note. And I didn't check my spelling, very tragically.
It was not an attack on you, [regular New Times contributor] Arielle Castillo, [Beached Miami's ]Jordan Melnick, or anybody. I wanted to make sure that you guys saw it. And literally, five or six minutes after I posted it, I took it down. But it was too late. It had already gotten picked up by County Grind. And that's when I decided, "I gotta repost this because people will want to know that it's something I actually put up."
Do you actually think noise and experimental music is crap?
It was an overstatement. I'd like to express that growing up my favorite band in the world was King Crimson. And obviously, they were a major forerunner in experimental music. I was a huge fan of Brian Eno's Here Come the Warm Jets.
And adding to the controversy, I squelched at one time. I was a Squelcher. I'm good friends with Rat Bastard. Well, I think I'm good friends with Rat Bastard. You never really know if you're friends with Rat or not. [Laughs]
But here's my position on noise: I do understand the concept of destructo art. And I do see the art in it. At the same time, though, I think a lot of the people who are in the noise movement are insulting to the people who actually perfect what they do.
What made you specifically target the noisy and experimental segment of the local scene?
I was a little puzzled when Augurari got Best Record Label. I went to their website and I noticed that it hadn't been updated in three months. It took them three days to finally acknowledge that they won. And I noticed that Roofless Records won last year. And that's also a noise label.
So you gotta understand that was something that did throw me for a loop. I had a lot of people screaming bloody murder at me, saying, "What the fuck happened?" And there are other labels, besides Forward Motion, that are doing really well over here.
Honestly, Forward Motion is working on a shoestring budget. But still, we're releasing albums by the shitload. Really, a lot of record labels release five or six albums per year. And right now, we're already at 25 releases in less than a year, which some people might say is suicide and some might say is a novel idea.
I know that you still believe in the main nugget of Friday's outburst. But if you could provide a revised version, what exactly were you trying to say?
I want more coverage of the pop scene and I just feel like a lot of artists in this town are being ignored by mass media. You know, there are artists who might not be cool enough. For example, Joshua Stedman ... He's not even on my label, I feel he's one of the gems of Miami. This guy is amazing. But he's kinda like Sting meets Seal or a Bruno Mars-type guy.
And one of the people who's been attacked the hardest [in the comments section of Fernando Perdomo Wants You to Know That Noise and Experimental Music Is Crap] is Randy Singer. I feel really bad for him because the guy has really done a lot for the scene. It kills me to see people attacking him so fucking hard. That guy puts together amazing singer-songwriter showcases at the Van Dyke.
There's so much variety at that club. But it doesn't get very much attention. And it is very square. I mean, the Van Dyke Cafe is not Churchill's. It's the opposite of Churchill's. It's a restaurant and a jazz club. There's red velvet. It's clean. You can sit down in the bathrooms.

Of course, I reject your criticism of New Times' coverage of noise and experimental stuff. But aside from not giving certain local acts or venues enough love, what else do you think the Miami music media is doing wrong?
Well, New Times and Beached Miami are the only ones who are really covering the local scene. Because damn ... My mom worked at the Miami Herald for 30 years. That's the family business and I can't get in the door with them because Jordan Levin won't write about fucking local music. And they even closed down the local music blog.
You know, wouldn't it be awesome if a local blog broke a band or broke a scene? But our scene is so disjointed. There's not a strip of clubs that defines our scene. There's not a certain genre that defines the scene. And I would just love for the newspapers and blogs, AKA Crossfade, to focus more on celebrating local indie bands and doing more local CD reviews, instead of silly lists or celebrity gossip or Fifty Songs About Drugs.
