As reported a few minutes ago by Crossfade's sister blog County Grind, bespectacled intellectual Elvis Costello has just delayed his current worldwide trek, cheekily named The Spectacular Songbook Tour, and postponed six shows including his September 18 stop at Hard Rock Live.

In a postponement announcement on elviscostello.com, the musician's camp explains: "It is with regret and sorrow that Elvis Costello announces that he must delay the start of the next leg of 'The Spectacular Spinning Songbook Tour' ... due to matters pertaining to the very serious illness of a close family member."

The tour will resume in Atlanta on September 24. Meanwhile, the canceled concerts in Mobile, Clearwater, Hollywood, Orlando, Jacksonville, and Durham won't be rescheduled until early 2012.

There's no word on the identity of Costello's ill family member. But the announcement reveals, "A spokesman for the tour stressed that Mr. Costello's wife [singer Diana Krall] and children were in excellent health," before explaining that this same source, "declined to elaborate further hoping that people would understand the desire and need for calm and privacy at this difficult time."

POSTPONED Elvis Costello. Sunday, September 18. Hard Rock Live, One Seminole Way, Hollywood. The show starts at 7 p.m. and tickets cost $45 to $85 via ticketmaster.com. Call 954-327-7625 or visit hardrocklivehollywoodfl.com.
