Dan "Doormouse" Martin is one of the only local producers making breakcore, the latest twist on experimental electronic music. Operating in a post-Schematic environment, the producer is more likely to be found spinning hip-hop records at Buck 15 and Purdy Lounge than cranking out his cut-and-paste splatter tracks, which is why his new album, Stanley Yershonowski Presents Xylophone Jism as the Ridiculator, is something of a treat, a rare view into an aesthetic that gets little attention here. Since Doormouse relies heavily on samples, particularly old jazz loops played over a 45 rpm, this album is more accessible than the glitchy IDM relatively popular a few years ago. Accessible is a relative term of course: Everything is structured with booming drums that could make your eardrums pop, and as the album title indicates, a sick and twisted humor is present throughout.
