When news hit our inboxes that ’80s legends Dead Kennedys would be making a stop in South Florida on January 1, 2011, we didn’t know what to do. Should we hide our obvious New Year’s Eve hangovers and go out again in honor of our favorite San Fran-based hardcore punk rockers? Our gut reaction was “Yessssss!”
Then we remembered former frontman Jello Biafra (born Eric Reed Boucher) is just that, a former frontman. He quit the band in ’87 to pursue other projects. So far, three other dudes have tried to take his place — and nothin’. The band hasn’t released a full-length since 1986’s Bedtime for Democracy. (Or 1987’s Give Me Convenience or Give Me Death compilation, if you want to get technical.) So we wonder: Will semi-new vocalist Ron “Skip” Greer bring it as heavy as Jello would? We’re still dreaming of a “surprise appearance” by Mr. Boucher. But we’ve got to be realistic.
