On Thursday, December 12, movie theaters across the globe will screen Interstella 5555: The 5tory of the 5ecret 5tar 5ystem, the anime musical film set to the music of Daft Punk's second album, Discovery. The film has been remastered in 4K for the occasion. The robots collaborated with manga artist and anime creator Leiji Matsumoto and Toei Animation to bring the music to life, with Kazuhisa Takenouchi handling directing duties.

"We're excited to bring Daft Punk's iconic Interstella 5555, now fully remastered in stunning 4K, to cinemas for this one-night-only global event," said Marc Allenby, CEO of Trafalgar Releasing, in a statement. "This is a rare opportunity to experience the film on the big screen, along with accompanying Daft Punk music videos, and we can't wait to share it with audiences everywhere."

More than 800 theaters in 40 countries will screen the film, including some right here in South Florida, like Regal South Beach, Silverspot Cinema Downtown Miami, AVC Aventura 24, Coral Gables Art Cinema, AMC Sunset Place 24, and Silverspot Cinema Coconut Creek. Tickets go on sale today, November 13, at 9 a.m., with a complete listing of participating theaters available on the film's website.
If you've never watched the anime, Interstella follows the abduction of a trans-galactic alien rock band, with the film set to the music of Daft Punk's 2001 opus Discovery. Sections of the film were cut into memorable music videos for tracks like "One More Time," "Hard, Better, Faster, Stronger," and "Digital Love." The full film premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in 2003 and later had a short theatrical run. Interstella has infrequently been shown in cinemas over the years, so the 4K remaster release is a rare opportunity to see it on the big screen.

Following the hour-long film will also be a curated selection of iconic Daft Punk videos from directors like Spike Jonze, Michel Gondry, Seb Janiak, Roman Coppola, and Warren Fu.

To coincide with the re-release of Interstella in theaters, Daft Punk released Discovery: Interstella 5555 Edition, featuring the album's original Japanese artwork, in limited quantities on vinyl and CD.

Made up of Parisians Thomas Bangalter and Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo, Daft Punk has released four albums throughout its storied career. The pair's last release was 2013's Random Access Memories, with robots powering down in 2021 after announcing their breakup.
