Andy LaPlegua, the mastermind behind the twisted industrial / EBM / whatever juggernauts that are Combichrist and Icon of Coil, has a lot of pals in South Florida. So he seems to always be around, but not always in the way his most diehard fans would really like. A planned Combichrist headlining show last year (earlier this year?) at the now-defunct Studio A fell through. LaPlegua later returned to the venue, but in his more big-room-dance-music-friendly guise, Scandy. As Combichrist, he managed to play a set earlier this year at Revolution, supporting Mindless Self Indulgence, but his set took place so early, adults making their way over slowly from work mostly missed it.
So Combichrist fans should be happy that the Norwegian has chosen to kick off his proper U.S. headlining tour here, on Jan. 14. The show isn’t at Revolution, Culture Room, or any of the other usual-suspect venues, but rather, Club Premiere, at 2520 Miami Rd. in Ft. Lauderdale. That should make for entertaining people-watching for the place’s staff, as it seems to usually be a hip-hop/reggae club.
The opening act is Black Light Burns, which famously features from Wes Borland from Limp Bizkit. Don’t let that instantly turn you off, though — Borland has long left behind his involvement in music for frat assholes. His new act is pretty industrial-flavored, heavy with synths and programmed blast beats.
