Miami fans of intelligent, funky grooves and beats: This edition of the weekly Switch dance party at PS14 is for you. The star of the evening? The DJ/producer born Adam Dorn, a.k.a. Mocean Worker, known by the downbeat cognoscenti for his funk-inflected, organic take on jazzy drum ‘n’ bass, breaks, and any other soulful kinda beat.
A Mocean Worker track is a mix of old meets new, a cut-and-paste aesthetic of loops and breakdowns spiced up with live instrumentation. And MoWo, as he’s known for short, knows whereof he plays — his pops was a producer at Atlantic Records during its legendary Sixties and Seventies heyday. And he’s definitely got a knack for cinematic moods — in fact, you might recognize “Express Yourself” from the soundtrack to Mr. and Mrs. Smith, “Tres Tres Chic” from The Devil Wears Prada, or “Intothinair” from The Bourne Supremacy.
Saturday’s performance supports MoWo’s fifth album, titled, appropriately, Cinco de MoWo!. With an opening track like “Shake Your Boogie,” if this doesn’t move you, you’re either paralyzed or dead.
