With present-day experimental electronic music so often divided along trendy blog lines, it’s refreshing to hear a local act resurrect a genre that you don’t hear too much on Hype Machine and the like: trip-hop!
That’s why local three-piece Astrea Corporation is such a thrill, picking up vintage boom-bap beats and wrapping them in lush, electronic production. But the trio updates this ’90s-tinged sound with contemporary left-field flourishes such as looping vocals, warped bass lines, and a couple of doses of drum ‘n’ bass.
On a few excellent tracks, like the meanderingly lovely “Artifact A,” Astrea Corporation even gets positively new-age.
