Arturo Sandoval has firmly cemented himself in the annals of jazz. His performances are rich in history, education, reverence, and fun. This CD/DVD showcases his 40-plus years in the biz and is a galloping ride replete with Sandoval’s signature Afro-Cuban styling, raucous scat vocals (even a little rapping in “Eso Es Lo Que Hay”), and jazz, served straight-up or acid-laced. He pays respects to his mentor Dizzy Gillespie with “The Real McBop” and “Blues for Diz” and even runs through Alicia Keys’s “If I Ain’t Got You” with pleasure and élan. The album’s original compositions are full of unexpected zings and unrelenting jams. Live at the Blue Note once again proves Sandoval’s appeal is ageless.
