Arturo Sandoval

Miami’s favorite Cuban émigré, Latin jazz luminary, professor, and Dizzy Gillespie acolyte Arturo Sandoval will lay down his scorching Cubop trumpet lines on his own time at his own place. Billed as “The Trumpet’s Journey Through Cuban Rhythms,” this show appropriately features Afro-Cuban big band and bebop but also highlights Sandoval’s twin passion for classical, which dates back to the time during his youth when he first picked up the trumpet and studied under a Russian classical trumpeter. Dumbfounding as it might be, if Miami does indeed blossom as a jazz hot spot, we can thank none other than Dan Quayle, who, along with Gillespie, helped Sandoval settle locally after his defection from Cuba.
