Area 7 will hold its first Opera Mash-Up event Wednesday May 20, an event which “mashes” opera with various genres of music. Singers will come in and perform their favorite opera numbers, while sound engineer Billy (no surname) records them. From 9 to 10 p.m. the night will consist of straight opera, which Billy will then distort later by layering his own music on top from 10 to 11 p.m. Then from 11 to midnight, jazz musicians will play over the opera recordings. It will be like the audience is sitting in on a lo-fi studio recording, local promoter Bunny Foofoo says. Furthermore, it’s free and all ages. The events in June will feature Bluegrass artists.

Area 7 is located at 3809 Powerline Road, Oakland Park. For more information call 954-561-9134 or visit www.myspace.com/area7musicandale.
