  • Society BBQ

8300 NE Second Ave., (in The Citadel Miami) Miami Shores/Biscayne Park

With Society BBQ, prolific Miami chef Richard Hales departed from the Asian-inspired cuisine that put him on the map and tapped into his barbecue cravings. "When I'm at home, I'm cooking with wood and honing my skills," Hales told New Times in September of 2020. "There's something about leaving behind the electric and gas and using wood-fired grills. I've been toying with wood for six, seven years and you think you're going to control the fire, then it does something else. This is now what I want to master." Society BBQ offers lovingly smoked brisket burnt ends, pulled chicken, and ribs, available as platters or in sandwiches. For non-carnivores, Hales serves vegan burnt ends.

  • Swine Southern Table & Bar

2415 Ponce de Leon Blvd. Coral Gables/S. Miami

    786-360-6433

Located in a boutique-spangled strip on Ponce de Leon Boulevard, Swine Southern Table & Bar is a pork-themed place. Swine's setting is leisurely and cavernous; it sits inside a lofted two-story space lined with barn-wood walls and shelves holding colorful pickling jars. On the menu, there's mac and cheese with bacon, Brussels sprouts in bacon vinaigrette, sticky buns with candied smoked bacon, and an old-fashioned that mixes bacon-washed Old Overholt rye whiskey with maple syrup and house-made bitters. Malabar spinach is quickly wilted in a skillet and tossed with red onions, apples, and cheese-stuffed pimientos, all of it sloshed in boiled peanut vinaigrette. Mostly, though, Swine gives you what you want: bacon in your dessert and pork in your drink.Read our full review.

  • Uncle Tom's Barbecue

3988 SW Eighth St. Coral Gables/S. Miami

    305-445-0844

This place is about as American barbecue as Celia Cruz is Bobby Flay, but the food is muy buena. Ribs are neatly glazed and not too sweet, with a tang all their own. In fact, you can actually smell the distinct smoky aroma as soon as you get out of the car and walk toward this Christmas tree-light adorned log cabin on Calle Ocho. Inside, sit at a picnic table topped with a paper towel roll in an environment that includes photos of Rita Hayworth, Mae West, and Liberace. Ditch the menu and and just order the Argentine-inspired mixed grill. Served on a wooden cutting board, it comes with five baby-back ribs, a quarter barbecued chicken that's moist and tender, a hunk of churrasco (with a side of chimichurri, of course), garlic sausage, and tasty blood sausage. Sides include Latin staples such as sweet plantains, black beans, and rice, with coleslaw and baked beans thrown into the mix.
