  • Hole In The Wall Pub

14421 S. Dixie Highway, Palmetto Bay East Kendall/Pinecrest

    786-227-6058

Hole in the Wall Pub takes its name pretty literally. An all-American dive bar of the best kind, they serve up char-grilled wings and cheap beer to football fans, day drinkers and degenerates. Don't take offense - we're all one of the above from time to time. Mozy up to the bar and score some mild/medium/hot or BBQ, honey, teriyaki or garlic wings (10 for $9, 20 for $17). Or opt for a Death Dog ($5) or jumbo burger ($7.50) Plus PBR is $1.50 a pint at this Palmetto Bay staple. Nothing says USA like wing-sauce smeared fingers and bulbous beer bellies.

  • Hurricane Grill & Wings

    3201 N. Miami Ave. Midtown/Wynwood/Design District

    305-576-7133

The highlight of Hurricane Grill & Wings is the seemingly endless choice of sauces - 32, to be exact - that flavor the wings. They are broken down into groups ranging from category one (mild) to category five (seek shelter) and include flavors as varied as barbecue, Jamaican jerk, and "ridiculously hot hurricane sauce." It might sound a little gimmicky, but the sauces aren't bad. Wings - boneless and otherwise - are sold in ten, 15, 20, and 50 piece platters ($10 to $40). The menu also includes a large selection of appetizers such as smoked fish dip ($9) and nachos and cheese dip ($7), as well as sandwiches ($8 to $10), salads ($4 to $10), burgers ($8 to $9), and seafood ($11). Add to that a solid selection of beers and microbrews - from Corona to Purple Haze - and flat-screen TVs, and this Midtown Shops outpost of the Fort Pierce chain becomes a great place to watch sports in an area with few options for that.

  • The Irish Times Pub & Eatery

5850 Sunset Dr., South Miami Coral Gables/S. Miami

    305-667-4114

For decades, University of Miami students have been trying to dupe the bouncers at this Celtic-themed tavern within walking distance of campus. Yet no matter how closely they resemble their older cousin's expired driver's license photo, the bouncer, propped on his stool outside the double doors, inevitably refuses to let them in. Poor underage drinkers. They're missing out on a beacon for Dade's partygoers looking to keep the night from ending at a 5 a.m. liquor license establishment. But it's not just the postmidnight crowd that has kept the Irish Times clicking on a busy South Miami corner. A hearty menu with everything from sliders to mac 'n' cheese and more traditional fare like bangers 'n' mash, fish 'n' chips and shepherd's pie ensures an all-hours crowd. The double doors in front are left open rain or shine, and the friendly staff is welcoming whether you order a pint of Guinness before noon or are stopping by on your commute home for a game of pool. Assuming, of course, you're not a wayward freshman slurring the lyrics to Katy Perry's latest hit. You should probably just head back to the dorms.

  • Jaguar Sun

    230 NE Fourth St. Downtown/Overtown

This downtown haunt is home to amazing cocktails, delicious pastas, raw-bar options, and fluffy Parker House rolls that taste like pillows from heaven. Owners Will Thompson and Carey Hynes moved to Miami in 2018 to open a chic tropical bar that was an instant hit with locals. It remains a perfect spot for first dates, martinis with friends after (or during) a long week, and pre-Miami Heat game cocktails and bites. Their motto is, "If you come for the cocktails and stay for the food — great. And if you come for the food and stay for the cocktails — great!" Reservations for the dining room are highly suggested, but the bar area is where the real party is to be found. Always check out the "Freak of the Week'' section of the menu, where you'll find the featured specialty cocktail. Note to newcomers: Jaguar Sun is located inside the X Miami building on NE Fourth Street; it's accessible via a side door on the breezeway that runs alongside the Metromover, appropriately marked with an arrow sign that reads "COCKTAILS."

  • Jezebel Bar + Kitchen

1625 Michigan Ave., Miami Beach South Beach

    786-275-6324

Jezebel Bar + Kitchen is a Miami Beach bar and restaurant helmed by Liquid Hospitality’s Chris Paciello and Mio Danilovic. Tucked away on the corner of Michigan Avenue and Lincoln Road, Jezebel serves as the quintessential locale for classic cocktails and sophisticated fare in an unassuming environment. The 2,300 square-foot bar, a collaboration between Liquid Hospitality and cutting-edge interior designer Francois Frossard, offers an atmosphere reminiscent of an old-world speakeasy. Held standing by Venetian columns, the dimly lit space feels comfortably worn, with vintage leather furniture and a vast wooden slab bar, serving as the centerpiece of the venue. Offering an edgy component to Jezebel’s vibe, the main walls are splashed with the street art of Miguel Paredes, featuring scenes from New York City. Trading soda guns and cans for glass bottles, each detail of the bar is carefully curated to create an environment where guests can feel comfortable to sip and savor.

  • Keg South of Kendall

12805 SW 136th Ave. West Kendall

    305-253-2043

Though located north of its Homestead predecessor, the second installation of Keg South might be harder to find. It's not as spacious as a typical sports bar, but the cramped quarters add to the allure. There are plenty of entertainment options, including pool tables, videogames, and flat-screens to take in sporting events. But it's the food that draws most patrons. The long appetizer list has all the sports-bar favorites plus a couple of specialties such as chicken gumbo soup ($4.49), served with chicken chunks and sausage. Burgers are the tavern's specialty. There is a three-fourth-pound patty prepared to order ($7.29), along with all manner of smaller versions and sliders. As expected, the place offers a variety of wings, with ten ($7.29) or 20 ($13.39) that come grilled or fried. An array of beef entrées features the popular 20-ounce center-cut porterhouse ($14.99) and "the almost famous Keg bites" ($12.59), which bring ten ounces of filet mignon tips. A good choice for vegetarians or those tired of meat is the tuna steak wrap (market price), served with wasabi sauce in a tomato-basil wrap.

  • Lincoln's Beard Brewing Co.

    7360 SW 41st St. Coral Gables/S. Miami

    305-912-7390

When John Falco opened Lincoln's Beard in May 2016, he chose a spot near Westchester rather than compete with established brewers in Wynwood and Doral. Today, Falco's brewery stands as a community hub in Miami's Bird Road Art District. It's an industrial space where you can always find a cold pint served with a hefty dose of ambiance and live entertainment. Part of its success is Falco's commitment to giving back, continually playing host for a fundraising karaoke night or beer-and-food-inspired festival. The house-brewed beers rotate frequently and pair perfectly with the on-premises food truck, Lala’s Burgers, an offshoot of the wildly popular Apocalypse BBQ. The smash patty-focused menu goes well with any of the core brews — say, Crisp-O-Currency Czech pale lager or P. Swayze American IPA.

  • PL8

210 SW Second St. Fort Lauderdale

    954-524-1818

Formerly known as Himmarshee Bar & Grille, PL8 specializes in small plates, which include seafood, sliders, skewers, pizzas, salads, and greens. A stylish dining room is anchored by bar tables of reclaimed wood and sleek steel. Abstract silk-screens and varied textures nod to nature. Accent lighting is easy on the eyes too, especially in the adjacent room at Sidebar, with its name spelled out in orbs like a retro-sexy Lite Brite. Try the local rock shrimp bruschetta with fresh ricotta, roasted cherry tomatoes, and a touch of balsamic or the arugula and roasted corn salad with smoked almonds and strawberries. In both dishes, the kitchen nods to local ingredients and tends to detail by adding complexity with roasted vegetables. Mini bratwurst sliders are also crowd pleasers, served with red-bliss potato salad as a condiment with violet mustard. The menu encourages sharing, so grab a table, graze on a few plates, and allow yourself to people-watch in one of the most animated stretches of town.
