  • Churchill's Pub

5501 NE Second Ave. Midtown/Wynwood/Design District

    305-757-1807

A local institution, Churchill's Pub has hosted more live shows than just about any other venue in town. For more than 40 years, this dive bar has been a haven for the punk and alternative bands that played on its indoor and outdoor stages. Even as it hosted the likes of Marilyn Manson (or that random guy down the street who just wanted to play his music), this grungy drinking den has remained true to itself: Churchill’s has a well-earned reputation for welcoming musicians of all sorts to its stages. Cheap beer, loud music, and a classic bar-food menu are the hallmarks of a beloved dive bar, and Churchill’s offers them all.

  • Clevelander South Beach

1020 Ocean Dr., Miami Beach South Beach

    305-532-4006

If you want your burgers and beer served with a side of revelry, the Clevelander is your spot. We can think of no other place where you can splash in a pool, hang out with body-painted women, and watch a football game on a 20-foot LED screen (or more than 40 other monitors throughout the property). The Clevelander offers multiple spots to drink on the premises, including the poolside Beach Club, the rooftop terrace overlooking Ocean Drive, and Shuckers at Clevelander Sports Bar, the last of which serves up grilled wings, coconut shrimp, and loaded nachos and other "beloved Shuckers favorites" that were mainstays at the late lamented North Bay Village institution.

  • Copper 29

206 Miracle Mile Coral Gables/S. Miami

    786-830-9640

This speakeasy-inspired bar in Coral Gables looks to classic New Orleans watering holes for inspiration. When you walk through the nondescript door, you'll find a lounge area with red leather couches. The space opens to the main room, resplendent with a mahogany bar lined with leather-upholstered stools. Chandeliers and vintage lamps light the space, but the most eye-catching features are the two large walls cascading with devil's ivy that sandwich bookcases holding a curated array of select small-batch spirits not found anywhere else.

The Dive Bar is the Galt Ocean Mile's quintessential locals-only spot off A1A in Fort Lauderdale. But don't let that name trick you; it's no hole in the wall. Its namesake is actually for the snorkelers and divers who have a tendency to hang out there. Filled with pool tables, an enormous bar, and a stage for live acts and karaoke nights, the Dive Bar has all the necessities for a great night out. Not only is this bar unique in dƩcor but its crowd is an eclectic bunch who will share stories of the great sea with just about anyone who is interested. • Eddie's Place

    12606 SW Eighth St. Tamiami

    305-226-1421

Now in its 41st year, Eddie's Place was named after owner Wanda's late husband, who co-owned the bar. A semi-modern-day Cheers whose patrons seem really attached to the place, the no-frills pub has played host over the years to four weddings and at least one funeral. "Everybody knows everybody else's business, and what they don't know, they make up," Wanda says of the regulars. Three dollars will buy you a vodka cocktail, $2.25 a draft beer. If you want to take a break from all the catching up, you can play a video game or silently munch on some of the potato chips Wanda picks up from Publix. Eddie's Place is open daily from noon to 5 a.m.

  • Elwoods Gastro Pub

    188 NE 3rd Ave. Downtown/Overtown

    305-358-5222

This roadside gem boasts a simple menu, casual atmosphere, and fair share of beer and wine. Family owned and operated, Elwoods has plenty of personality, delicious fish and chips ($9), and succulent burgers ($6 with fries), although $4 for an ice cream sandwich is a bit much. Less-is-more mentality is definitely at play at Elwoods, though it's not a bad thing. Simple design and layout make you feel right at home, allowing the food and drink to take center stage. Servers are pleasant and helpful. And if you arrive to watch a sporting event, you can take advantage of a big screen and great specials. Or swing by for happy hour Monday through Friday from 3 to 7 p.m.

  • Fado Irish Pub

    900 S. Miami Ave. Brickell

    786-924-0972

Fado Irish Pub isn't your typical beer joint - it's probably one of the best-staffed bars in Miami-Dade. Everywhere you turn, there's someone there to take your order. Located in busy Mary Brickell Village, the pub is a great place to meet for happy hour drinks or to watch a rugby game. The cavernous space features many intimate nooks and hidden tables. A dark wooden main bar snakes around the biggest of three rooms. When the weather is pleasant, the large windows are opened, letting in fresh air. There's plenty of Irish beer on tap, as well as a full liquor bar. The atmosphere is a cross between ship on water, traditional Irish pub, and Dance Party U.S.A. Next to a row of cozy booths, sections of the floor light up in changing colors, a perfect dance floor on which to boogie after a few drinks.

  • The Field Irish Pub & Eatery

    3281 Griffin Rd. Fort Lauderdale

    954-964-5979

For two decades, the Field has brought Ireland to South Florida. The bar began as a small cottage but has expanded to five dining rooms, a bar, and a big patio bar under a stately banyan tree. Here, find a fine pour of Ireland's elixir, Guinness stout, along with Smithwick's (pronounced "Smiddicks") red Irish ale. There's also Irish coffee to sip by the fireplace (when those Florida nights dip below 60 degrees) and, on weekends, live music from Irish bands. The Field offers a full menu of Irish favorites, from Irish stew to corned beef and cabbage, and an Irish breakfast (on weekends).

  • Fox's Lounge

    6030 S. Dixie Highway Miami-Dade - South

    305-703-6553

For seven decades, Fox's Sherron Inn was Miami's dark bar: a place to drink martinis, canoodle with a secret paramour, or forget your troubles with (or without) a buddy. Fox's closed in July 2015, but Lost Boy & Co.'s Chris Hudnall and Randy Alonso (see also Tropezón and Brother's Keeper) have reconstituted the joint as Fox's Lounge. Their loving attention to detail brings instant nostalgia to all who pass through its doors. The martinis are strong, the burger is classic, and the bar is as dark and cool as a cave. Walking in, it takes a minute to adjust your eyes to the dimly illuminated palace of cocktails, but there's no adjusting to the precisely crafted drinks, the classic menu, and the friendly banter between you and the new friend you made at the bar. The new Fox's is a welcome and wonderful tribute to old Miami.

  • The Foxy Brown

476 N. Federal Highway Fort Lauderdale

    754-200-4236

A Fort Lauderdale mainstay for nearly a decade, restaurateur Eliott Wolf’s Foxy Brown serves up well-executed comfort food in an inviting setting. The patty melt is perfect, the beef-a-roni and mac-and-cheese expertly calibrated, the French onion soup exhibiting an ideally Instagrammable cheese pull. The Foxy shines during weekend brunch, when you can indulge your inner child with s’mores waffles, doughnut holes, and a banana-bread grilled cheese sandwich filled with ricotta and Nutella. (Yep, you read that right.) All that plus cocktails, bloody marys, mimosas, and, if you’ve got the stamina, milkshakes — including boozy varieties.

  • Gordon Biersch Brewery & Restaurant

    1201 Brickell Ave. Brickell

    786-425-1130

There are ostensibly other reasons besides beer to visit Gordon Biersch: The room is sleekly attractive, with a shiny brewery behind glass walls. The staff is accommodating and the largely professional clientele energetic - perhaps an understatement on Friday afternoons, when the Brickell office buildings empty out. And the 320-seat restaurant (including 90 patio seats) serves a wide variety of decent fare. Still, downtown Miami's only microbrewery impresses most with its smooth lagers: Golden Export is a lightly hopped pilsner with a dry finish; Marzen is a smooth, auburn-colored lager; and Hefeweizen is a yeasty and equally tasty unfiltered wheat beer. The place also has bar-food favorites such as Kobe beef sliders, served on house-made rolls along with a Kosher dill pickle, mustard sauce, and a side of fried onion strings ($10.95.) Then there are Southwest egg rolls - featuring pulled chicken, black beans, corn, roasted red peppers, and pepper jack cheese - accompanied by a roasted jalapeƱo ranch dipping sauce ($8.95.) In the mood for pizza? GB has eight, plus a make-your-own option, all under $12.25. Pasta or chicken your fix? Get 'em together with house specialty fire-roasted chicken and fettuccine with sun-dried tomatoes in a pesto cream sauce ($15.95.) No matter how you slice it, you'll get your fill at this New American filling station.

The walls inside this sports bar are lined with shadow boxes filled with an expansive sneaker collection, while the walls outside are covered in seasonally changing, sports-themed murals. Cocktails are served in collectible porcelain sneakers and paired with upscale bar bites like cheeseburger dumplings. If there's a game, fight, or match being broadcast, odds are it's being shown on one of the 50-plus monitors arrayed both indoors and out. Pro tip: Visit Grails' sister bar, Spanglish, next door for high-end, Cuban-inspired cocktails and bites.
