Looks like another Irish pub on South Beach has closed its doors. Waxy O’ Connor’s on Washington Avenue closed over the weekend, with the following message on its Facebook page:
“We have closed our doors at our Waxy’s South Beach Location. Come see us at Waxy’s Fort Lauderdale! Download our app!”
Though there are literally thousands of Irish pubs all over the world, Waxy O’Connor’s is a South Florida original. The first location opened in Fort Lauderdale in 1997, with locations in South Beach, on the Miami River, and in other out-of-state sites following.
Each of the bars were actually custom built in Ireland and shipped to the United States. The bar is named after an Irish term for “lucky,” coined from a tale about a candle maker who escapes from a raging fire.

Though the Miami Beach location, frequented by locals and tourists alike for an apres-beach beer on draft or to watch the game, is closed, a call to the Fort Lauderdale location assured us that both that pub and the Waxy’s on the Miami River remain open
Upscale Irish pub, Clarke’s, closed on South Beach earlier this year, leaving Playwright’s Irish Pub as one of the few places to grab a pint in a dark wooden bar in the neighborhood.
