Tula’s Greek Delights: Christmas Sweetness

Dimitra Marsellos or “Tula” as she is known to family and friends, is exactly what you would expect from a Greek mother; vivacious, full of energy and always in the kitchen cooking up a storm. Tula’s cookies have seen the Marsellos clan through weddings, baptisms and memorials.  “Good food and cooking is the lifeline to a family” says Bia, Tula’s daughter and business partner in Tula’s Greek Delights.

This mother-daughter team is using recipes that have been in the family for generations to make cookies like paximadia (Greek biscotti), baklava, melomakarona and kourabiethes to locals that want a piece of Greece around their dinner table.

Tula’s famous sweet and flaky baklava draws crowds to the annual St. Sophia Easter Festival and her koulourakia, drizzled with sesame seeds and with just a hint of sweetness, is braided the same way her grandmother did generations ago back in Fiva, Greece. “Everyone braids it a bit differently – it’s your signature” and Tula’s braids are known to those who’ve been eating her sweet delights for years.
