In honor of their three-year anniversary, the owners of Michael’s
Genuine Food & Drink are celebrating with a gourmet street pushcart. This epicurean
food conveyance debuts on Saturday night at 7 p.m. in the Design District. Look
for chef/owner Michael Schwartz and his amazing pastry chef, Hedy Goldsmith, to
be operating the MGFD cart, along with students from Johnson & Wales. They
will be located at NE 40th Street and First Avenue during
the neighborhood’s monthly Art Walk.
Michael’s steely pushcart won’t be hawking the usual hot dogs and
burgers. Instead, the offerings are decidedly foodie-friendly with Hedy’s kasha
knishes, thick cut potato chips, homemade sausage sandwich and buttered popcorn
ice cream. Condiments are just as glorious (and complimentary), such as
homemade local cabbage slaw, pickles and hot sauce. Wash it all down with fresh
local strawberry-basil soda. Better yet, the prices are wallet-friendly, with
nothing over $6. (They only accept cash, so break out those singles.)
“We’ve been playing with the idea of street vending for some
time,” says Schwartz. “It’s a great way to test new items and connect with
customers outside of the restaurant. We challenged ourselves to do it the
genuine way, with everything made fresh yet easily transportable. I’m excited
with the result and looking forward to hitting the street.”
We advise that you get there early because they will be only
serving 100 portions of each dish. You can track the cart and its weekly whereabouts
at www.thegenuinekitchen.com/vending.
