This week was pretty exciting in the Miami food scene, rainy days notwithstanding. This weekend is no slouch, either, with a host of free events, openings, and, of course, the last weekend in which to indulge in a three-course Miami Spice meal.

Beach Party in Aventura Courtesy of Pollo Tropical
Pollo Tropical is having a grand opening of their newest restaurant in Aventura, at Grand Opening in Aventura, at 20403 Biscayne Blvd., in the Promenade Shops. To celebrate, they’re turning the land-locked city into a beach — with proceeds benefiting the Boys & Girls Clubs of South Florida.
Today from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., enjoy live music, a recreated beach, and a surfing challenge where local media personalities take their turns on a surfing simulator.
In addition, the first 100 guests will receive a coupon for a free “create your own” family meal, redeemable on a future visit to any Pollo Tropical location. And one lucky winner from those first 100 people will win free chicken for a year. The drawing will take place at 11 a.m. and participants must be present to win.
Viernes Culturales and Pastelito Daiquiris
Every once and a while it’s good to get off the beach and seek some culture. Tonight, Calle Ocho is hosting Viernes Culturales. Think of it as Wynwood’s art walk with a lot more sabor. Take a free cultural tour tonight at 7 p.m. (the tour meets at the Tower Theater), then head over to Ball & Chain (across the street) for a pastelito daiquiri.
Brunch at 15th & Vine Kitchen and Bar
There’s a new brunch in town and it comes with gorgeous views and bottomless cocktails. 15th & Vine Kitchen & Bar is introducing their weekend brunch, available every Saturday and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Menu items include blueberry-lemon pancakes; grilled flatbread topped with roast pear, blue cheese, caramelized onion and arugula; ropa vieja panini and the Viceroy burger. For those watching their carbs, the popular eatery also offers healthy items like salmon a la plancha and pan roasted chicken breast.
For $15 each, chase down brunch with unlimited mimosas or bloody mary cocktails. Brunch at 15th & Vine is available from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., every Saturday and Sunday.
PInkberry Birthday
The world is divided into two sets of people. Those who love froyo and those who are so joyless they wouldn’t appreciate a basket of puppies. For people who are of the I-love-frozen-treats-and-baby-animals ilk, head over to Pinkberry in Midtown Miami this weekend for their one year anniversary celebration. Enjoy DJs, a clown, and face painting, and if you find a sticker under your cup of yogurt, it’s free. Plus, on Saturday and Sunday, the first 10 guests will receive a free small frozen yogurt and evey guest will receive half-priced treats before noon.
Last Chance for Miami Spice
October is closing in on us and that means the last chance for Spice. Those fantastic three-course $23 lunches and $35 dinners disappear on September 30 and this is the last weekend to take advantage of the fantastic deals at restaurants — including ones you’ve been dying to try out like Mignonette, J & G Grill, and Haven South Beach.
