In our experience, trips to Miami International Airport are anything but good for our health. Between the stress of parking and getting through security to the greasy cheese pizza we shovel down before running onto a flight, every airport trip feels like it takes a year off our life.
But according to the 2011 PCRM (Physicians’ Committee for Responsible Medicine) report, MIA is one of the country’s best airports to find heart-healthy food.
In the group’s rankings of the most heart-healthy airport cuisine, MIA actually nabbed sixth in the country.
How’d they decide that? They gathered their data by “sending dietitians [to] review restaurant menus at the 15 busiest U.S. airports.” (We can’t help but wonder if they perused through La Carretta, TGIF’s and Wendy’s menus at MIA.)

And why should anyone care whether their local airport serves healthy food? Well, the CDC says that, “meals which contain a healthy amount of immunity-boosting nutrients will help passengers stay healthy.” The CDC also notes that, “fruits and vegetables have high water and fiber content,” and building a meal from that will keep travelers hydrated in the low-humidity plane environment.
Alright, so now we know MIA food ain’t so bad, and that will give us a bit more peace of mind when we get ready for our flights.
The top dog on the list, with 100 percent of its eateries ranked “heart-healthy,” was Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport; in last, at 71 percent, was Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport.
