In October Mercadito Restaurants launched Tacos for Strength, a national campaign that supports Share Our Strength’s fight to end hunger by 2015. Each month a new taco goes on the menu and five percent of the sales from these tasty bites go towards feeding hungry kids nationwide.

Patricio Sandoval, Mercadito Restaurants’ Culinary Director, created the program that features a different guest chef’s taco creation every month. November’s spicy shrimp taco with avocado. It was the idea of Stephanie Izard, the chef at Girl and The Goat in Chicago. And with 1 in 6 children at risk of hunger, eating a tasty taco to help is not a bad idea.

December’s taco, short rib with spicy green tomato slaw, is the work of Miami’s own Michelle Bernstein. She took inspiration from her favorite LA Kogi taco truck and strived to create a flavor that is “Southern with a taste of Florida.” The spicy melt-in-your-mouth Korean-style short rib sits under a crunchy bed of tangy green tomatoes is available through the end of the month at Mercadito for $16. At four to an order, it’s something you can feel good about eating it too.
