The King turned 27 Friday and celebrated with a monstrous, five-tiered confection from Divine Delicacies Custom Cakes.

The fondant-covered vanilla rum cake with edible gold lion heads and a monogrammed “LJ” (created by Miami Cake Monogram) was delivered to the Shelborne on Miami Beach for a New Year’s Eve fete. The dessert was prepared to feed 250 people.

Divine Delicacies was also called on to make James’ cake last year. The 2012 version is significantly shorter than last year’s 8-footer, but it gets our vote for its less garish color scheme and accents that lend more toward elegance than whimsy.

Director of sales Laura Candeau said she hadn’t received an order by early Saturday morning, yet she had a suspicion a confection-related surprise request was going to come in that night so she baked extra cakes. “I knew he played on his birthday in Minnesota the day before and wasn’t at home to celebrate,” she said, “And I knew that if he was going to do a birthday affair he would have his team contact us for the cake. What the King wants he gets!”

Will you step up to support New Times this year?

At New Times, we’re small and scrappy — and we make the most of every dollar from our supporters. Right now, we’re $17,800 away from reaching our December 31 goal of $30,000. If you’ve ever learned something new, stayed informed, or felt more connected because of New Times, now’s the time to give back.

$30,000

As it turns out, the night was an extra special one for more reasons than just James’ birthday and the start of a new year: Candeau reports James proposed to his longtime girlfriend, Savannah Brinson, at the event. [An ESPN story from last night confirms the news.] Brinson said, “Yes!” Obviously the sweets did the trick. Short Order extends our congratulations to the royal couple.
